The name Makalu is derived from a name for the Hindu God Shiva that translates to “Big Black.” The mountain has another name in the local dialect - Kumba karna, which means The Giant. The isolated peak whose spectacular shape is a four-sided pyramid straddles the border of Nepal and Tibet.
