Caution and Caring for Crystal Sound Healing Instruments
Fragile Crystal Singing Bowls and More
How to Care for Your Crystal Instruments
Our Crystal Singing Bowls, Crystal Tuning Forks, Crystal Pyramids, and Crystal Merkabas are soothing instruments that create beautiful, rich tones. Sound healers and musicians all over the world have fallen in love. Playing and hearing these bowls brings immediate calm and helps to release stress. They are the perfect addition to any sound healer’s collection of metal gongs and singing bowls. If you’re here, you probably already know how great they are.
Quartz crystal bowls are essentially a glass product made from silica sand, also known as quartz sand (learn more about this here on our blog). Since they are made of a type of crystal glass, they are much more prone to damage than gongs and bronze singing bowls.
They’re not so delicate or fragile that you should be scared of using them, and we don't want to plague anyone with fears of broken instruments–but they can be sensitive to unnecessary impact, so it’s very important to approach them with care, mindfulness, and moderation. These are subtle instruments. They benefit from the user being centered and focused when playing. Approaching them this way will not only help you to avoid damaging the bowls, it’s also beneficial for the people receiving the sound healing from you. They will ground their energy to match yours.
By following this guidance along with the tips below, your crystal singing bowls, crystal tuning forks, crystal pyramids, and crystal merkabas will safely provide you with peaceful, soothing tones for many, many years.
- We recommend that you use the mallet provided. If you’re testing mallets other than what we've recommended, try them very carefully and gently. If you have questions about mallets, don’t hesitate to contact us. When tapping your bowl or crystal instrument for the first time or when trying a new mallet, start slowly and gently. Get a feel for the mallet, the instrument, and the sound by tapping very softly before adding more power.
- When carrying a crystal bowl or other instrument, carry from the bottom with both hands and pay full attention to what you’re doing and what’s around you. Be mindful and cautious and make sure the instrument is fully supported. Wash your hands before touching the crystal to minimize the amount of oil you leave on the surface.
- If travelling with your crystal instruments, transport them in professionally-made, well-padded carrying bags or cases. We have cases and bags designed specifically for each of the crystal instruments we offer – see crystal bowl cases here, padded bowl inserts here, crystal merkaba cases here (from Gongs Unlimited), crystal pyramid cases here (also from Gongs Unlimited), and crystal tuning fork cases here (Gongs Unlimited).
- When not using your crystal instruments, keep them in one of the padded cases or bags linked above. If you keep them on display in your home or studio, let them rest on a padded surface – for crystal bowls, use the rubber o-rings we provide. Do not store things inside of your crystal bowls or on top of your crystal instruments.
- Do not use crystal bowls on your head or any way other than intended with the o-rings.
- Do not allow children to play your crystal bowls and other crystal instruments. We think sound bath meditation is great for kids – many instruments (wave drums for example) are perfect for them to play with – but we don’t recommend letting them handle crystal bowls or instruments.
